Avoiding those nasty diaper rashes on your baby

Babies’ skin is very sensitive; therefore extra care must be given to them. One of the most common skin allergies babies suffer from is diaper rash. Using the right baby products and making sure that you’re baby’s skin is clean are the easiest ways to prevent diaper rash.

Diaper rash is usually cause by constant wetness and friction with the diaper that gives red, irritated, and uncomfortable skin. If not quickly prevented, it can cause blisters, pimples, and other sores on his buttocks, thigh, and genital area.

Preventing and curing diaper rashes is quite easy. Just make sure to:

  • Change soiled diaper right away. Depending on your baby’s delicate system, liquid intake and overall state of health, change diaper every two hours.
  • Make sure that you use only high quality diaper that does not easily get wet and stays dry on the surface to avoid wetness. Using the exact size as your baby’s built is also important to ensure his comfort.
  • Depending on your preference, you may completely avoid using commercial wet wipes since most of them contain strong ingredients like alcohol and other chemicals that can irritate your baby’s sensitive skin. You can just opt for hypoallergenic soap and water to clean your baby’s bottom.
  • Just as diapers have different fit and protection capacity, wet wipes also have various scents so try to use different brands to see what works best on your baby’s skin. Some scents may turn out to be too strong for your baby’s skin to handle.
  • Make sure that you clean your baby’s bottom and surrounding area properly. Wipe thoroughly- get rid of all traces of stool or urine. If your baby’s not sensitive, you can put baby powder afterwards. If the diaper is just wet, simple patting will do.
  • When you change diaper, pat his bottom with clean towel first to ensure that it’s completely dry out before putting fresh diaper.
  • Use diaper rash cream that your doctor recommended. It helps create a barrier in the skin. Some of the widely used creams/ointments include A and D ointments, Diaperene, Desitin, and zinc oxide. Petroleum jelly is also a good alternative.
  • During the day, don’t put diapers on your baby so his skin can breathe, which can allow skin healing.

Babies are sensitive and delicate little creature that needs to be given tender loving care at all times. Cleanliness is the foundation of good health not only for your baby but for the whole family as well. So if you want your little bundle of joy to be healthy inside and out, start cleaning up your act now.
