World Breastfeeding Week and your pregnancy

World breastfeeding week is celebrated globally from 1st to 7th day of August each year and Malaysia is one of the active participants. The week is commemorated by various events to magnify the interest of women in their pregnancy about breastfeeding. The unparalleled benefits of breastfeeding are always highlighted. The proponent of these events inspire all mothers to breastfeed their babies soon after pregnancy.

According to reports, Malaysia has a lower breastfeeding rate than the average rates globally. Moms who solely nurse their baby with breast milk after pregnancy to six months are only about 15% compared to the 30% global average. Thus, Malaysia needs to intensify their breastfeeding campaign. Because of this, the recent celebration were geared to encourage women to learn more about it during pregnancy to realize how breastfeeding after pregnancy till six months or more can be advantageous.

Campaigning breastfeeding to women in their pregnancy

On August 6, a One-Minute Virtual Simultaneous Breastfeed was joined in by over 200 women who all together breastfed their baby whereas on the last day, more than a hundred local Penangites performed a three-minute flashmob at the Gurney Plaza addressed to all women in their pregnancy. They danced to the song “Feed the Future!” to creatively convey their message that breastfeeding should be the normal and natural way to feed the babies after pregnancy.

Should you breastfeed or not following pregnancy?

As a mom-to-be, you should already be considering a lot about how to feed your baby. During pregnancy, know your options and weigh them. Are you going to feed your baby your milk or a formula? If you have not thought about it yet during the recent World Breastfeeding Week now is still the best time to think it over if you’re going to breastfeed or not after pregnancy.
