Baby Week 15

Adaptive And More Motor Skills

Your baby is 15 weeks old today!  One more week and your baby will be four months old.  Last week, your baby was responding and showing more preference towards you.  This week, he is not only showing a preference, but he is also responding to comfort when he is upset.  You’ll notice that when he wants to be carried and starts crying or fussing, once you pick him up the fussing stops.  Don’t worry yet about spoiling your baby by always picking him up when he cries, for at this young age, it is important to meet his needs.  Your baby may have also learned to comfort himself when upset by sucking his thumb or using a dummy — this is also known as self-soothing.  Neither of my children sucked their thumb, but my daughter did use a dummy until she was about six months old.  We started to offer it to her at about two months old to help stretch out her feedings as her pediatrician said that she should be eating every three hours instead of every two hours.

Another development you’ll observe this week is that your baby will begin to play with his hands.  Last week, he figured out that he could bring his hands together at midline and now he has learned that he can play with his hands and it’s fun!  When my son finally figured out that he could hold his hands together at midline and play with them, there were a few instances when accidentally he hit himself in the face.  So just a warning, it does happen and for me, I thought it was actually really cute because he had such a surprised look on his face. All these new developments are keeping your baby very busy during the day.
