Baby Week 29

Social Interaction & Language And Communication

Your baby is 29 weeks old today and he is just the social butterfly!  He loves to see and be with you. There is no one quite as important to him as mom and dad!  If you have older children, you’ll notice that your baby watches his older sibling(s) like a hawk and is totally enamored with them, too.  I remember when my son was just about this age, whenever his older sister walked into the room he’d light up and smile from ear to ear!  And when she’d talk to him, he was the happiest baby in the world. It was a very adorable sight.

Around this time, you will see your baby starting to initiate contact with you by reaching.  He is becoming very good at getting his needs met and when he wants you, he lets you know.  While he loves the attention, there are times when he wants to communicate that he’s not interested in a certain object or he doesn’t want attention from someone – sometimes it may just be someone he is not quite familiar with.  For example, when I took my daughter back home to the U.S. one summer, my parents picked us up from the airport.  My mom and dad were so excited to see their granddaughter that my dad just scooped her up out of my arms.  My daughter did not cry, but she knew that she did not want her grandpa to carry her because she was not familiar with him as it was only the second time she had seen him since her birth.  Thus, she leaned out of his arms and started reaching for me.  Needless to say, that indifference only lasted for a few days on our trip and my daughter and my dad are now good pals.

Another skill that will start to become noticeable is your baby vocalizing “mama” and “dada,” but just not as names yet.  But keep repeating those sounds when your baby vocalizes them, as it will continue to encourage him.
