Baby Week 42

Communication

Your baby communicates her needs  through language and communication. When she was first born, her means of communication was crying.  Whether it was a full diaper, hunger or tiredness, your baby got her point across.  Eye contact was another way your baby communicated and then came cooing.  These were the ways that she communicated with you and they were all necessary skills she needed to achieve to get to the point she is at now.

Last month your baby may have started saying “mama” and “dada.”  This month she is making more strides as your baby is trying to imitate words that you say.   For example, I used to take my daughter down to the playground even though she was too young to run around and play with the other children.  She loved looking around at the children, grass, trees and birds.  When a bird landed near us, I pointed to it and said, “look at the bird!”  Immediately, my daughter said “ba” and I said, “yes, that’s right, bird.”  And every time she saw a bird she said, “ba.”

Also this month, you will notice that your baby has learned the names of one to two objects.  It could be her bottle, a favorite toy or even her security blanket (if she has one).  I realized that my daughter knew what her bottle was when it was just about time for her to have one. I would ask her “do you want your ba-ba?”  Each time she’d get very excited and show it by kicking her legs and vocalizing sounds. When you think about all of this, it’s quite amazing what babies learn and how quickly they learn it.   If your baby is not quite there yet, please don’t be alarmed, as babies differ in their pace of development.
