Teaching Preschool Kids the Meaning of Independence

June 12 is a special day to celebrate as a united and free nation. How can you turn this day a patriotic event with the whole family, especially with your preschool kid? Read these easy and practical ways to introduce Philippine Independence Day to your preschool kid.

Go to a historical park

Our country is studded with historical sites turned into family-oriented parks. One of the best places to go is the Luneta Park. It is the site of the historic proclamation of the country’s independence. It is also home to the infamous monument of the country’s National Hero, Jose Rizal. This will be the perfect place to recount to your preschool child about the life of our hero. Remember to show your preschool child the flagpole near the monument. It is the highest flagpole in the country, and dubbed as the Independence Flagpole.

Visit the museum

Museums are a haven of artifacts and arts from the past. They are an ideal site to teach your preschool child about our history, cultures, the emergence of nationalism, and the people behind our independence who we regard as heroes. One great museum that preschool children truly enjoy and appreciate history is the Philippine’s very own National Museum, which is only minutes away from the Luneta Park. They have great works of arts by National Artists depicting the early life of Filipino families in the hands of foreign colonizers. Another is Museo Pambata (translated, Children’s Museum), which is a museum chiefly for kids. It doesn’t have as many historical artifacts as National Museum does but it has a special area called the Karapatan Hall that advocates children’s rights. Remember to set your trip to museums days before or after, not on the holiday.

Get a history book

If you cannot go outside for some reasons then introduce Independence Day to your preschool child through a history book; if you have a child-oriented history book, the better. Otherwise, you can simply hook on to the internet and find free online resources about Independence Day. The web has a plethora of images. Thus, looking for pictures of our National Heroes is going to be easy.

Do activities together

You can do different activities related to Independence Day together with your preschool kid. You can do some colorings, paintings, or drawings about history. You can also make Philippine flags made from art papers.

Preschools can be a great venue to learn about Philippine independence and culture. However, preschool classes usually begin right after the Independence Day. Thus, parents should take the role of introducing Independence Day and what this day means to their life as a preschool child.
