5 Reasons Why Moms Should Listen to Podcasts

0

It was my husband who introduced me to the world of podcasts. We were on a long drive to a destination out of town, and stuck in traffic. He had recently picked up on the habit from his older brother, and was eager to share his discovery with me. Our babies were finally asleep and we no longer needed to play their lullabies over the car speakers.

He put on a podcast called “mixergy,” an interview format podcast for entrepreneurs, and I was pleasantly surprised at how engaged I was while listening to it. It was so interesting and educational that I felt inspired to do more for my own business afterwards. I enjoyed every minute of it, and it honestly made the trip go by much faster. This was my first experience of the world of podcasts, and I’ve been hooked ever since. In fact, I’ve subscribed to at least 10 podcasts on the app in my phone, and am so grateful for my husband to introducing them to me!

Is the world of podcasts foreign territory to you? Here are 5 good reasons why you should explore making listening to them one of your daily habits.

They make productive use of idle time–such as your daily commute or drive. Moms do a number of errands every day, and thus spend a lot of time in transit. Podcasts make the moments waiting in line or stuck in traffic much more bearable. It is like having company to chat with or watching TV as you wait.

They make good background “music” for mundane and mechanical tasks. Since discovering podcasts, I’ve used them to keep me entertained and stimulated while doing mechanical tasks such as cleaning up at home, or even organizing the inventory of my home business. The slow moments go by much faster, and turn out to be more productive thanks to the multi-tasking you were able to do!

They are educational and entertaining. There are podcasts for nearly every topic you can think of–from faith, to business, to motherhood, to fashion, to creativity. Get all the information you need on your subjects of interest, and find yourself becoming more inspired to become the best mom, wife, professional, artist, etc. you can be…and with all of the tips and tools to do it!

They provide you with perspective beyond your immediate community. In order to grow as individuals, we need to be able to expose ourselves to the perspectives and stories of those beyond our personal networks. While reading is one great way to do this, podcasts work best for the busy mama who simply does not have the luxury of time to sit in a corner and read.

They are catharsis, for the mother with many “feels.” There’s nothing quite like meeting a mom who understands perfectly your struggles, insecurities, and guilt. Podcasts provide a similar experience, because the truth is that these feelings are quite universal…it is just that not every woman is comfortable with sharing these feelings on social media. Podcasts are less guarded, less “highlight reel” which means that the experiences and stories turn out to be much more candid and authentic.
