A Name Like No Other Name would Sound Just as Sweet…NOT!

Back in high school, I used to have a classmate who was the epitome of beauty and grace–everyone would gawk at her chiseled nose and flawless, smooth face. It was no surprise that she became the ultimate crush ng bayan...but not until the day her legs accidentally got exposed. It was horribly filled with scars or “peklat”.  Poor classmate! The day her legs were revealed, embarrassment and shame were written all over her face. And I swear if the ground could open up that time, she would be willing to let herself get swallowed whole.

Let’s face it, having scars all over one’s legs are not exactly the kind for showing off.  In fact, scars bring an ugly stigma to all its helpless victims, most especially girls. A girl with numerous scars would most likely find herself an object of ridiculous and downright degrading names like “bakokang”, “bente-singko”, “mapa sa legs” and “piso”. And most likely the person bearing the stigma of a scar would carry it with her to adulthood.

So how does one battle the problem of scarring? Lucky for you and me, vast remedies are already made available to help minimize the appearance of scarring on the skin. I remember my Tita telling me that the most effective home remedy for scars is the application of honey on the affected area several times a day. It’s supposed to remove the scar while giving the skin a natural glow. Another friend swears by cocoa butter. She claims that cocoa butter is not only effective in removing her stretch marks, but it’s also useful in reducing other scar types. According to her doctor, cocoa butter contains an anti-oxidant that helps reduce and lighten scars.  On the other hand, one mommy friend is like a walking endorser for Terramycin Plus. She carries a tube with her always. My mommy friend swears strongly by Terramycin Plus (Polymixin B Sulfate + Bacitracin Zinc + Neomycin Sulfate) Antibacterial Skin Ointment’s triple antibiotic formulation. She says it heals wounds fast and helps minimize scarring. Perfect product for a mom who wants her daughter to be the next supermodel! Other people resort to applying a stronger sun block cream on the scar than the rest of the exposed skin. By doing so, you are actually making the scar look noticeably lighter as it blends with the other parts of the skin.

Now going back to the story of our almost but not quite campus figure, I wish I can say that she was still able to do something about her scars but unfortunately, she wasn’t able to do anything about it. Nonetheless, the story does not end here. Last thing I heard, she’s vigilantly taking care of her daughter’s dainty legs! I guess history won’t exactly repeat itself–no more “bakokang” but hopefully “wow legs!” Oh and by the way, she found an ally in Terramycin Plus!
