It looks like it doesn’t work at first but then when you turn it over the colours are pretty interesting.
What you need:
- Lots of wax crayon bits
- A piece of foil or cupcake tin
- Vegetable oil if using tin
- Toothpick or skewer
- Oven
- Hot pads to prevent burnt hands
What To Do:
- If using the foil, fold it to a shape that will hold the crayons. Square or what every shape you like. If using the tin, put about a spoonful of oil in the tin.
- Take the crayon bits (without paper wrapping!) and break them into small pieces and put in the foil or tin.
- Put in the oven and watch carefully as the crayons melt.
- Once it looks melted (It happens very quickly, in a few minutes) take out the container.
- Using the toothpick, swirl the colours around. On the top it looks like it isn’t working. All the colours blended completely to a deep brownish red. Don’t worry.
- With the tins, turn out the crayon mixture after it starts to cool but not completely as it might get sticky.
- With the foil, let it cool completely (10 minutes or so)
- Turn out the crayon mixture and see what you get.
The science:
In physics, melting is the process of heating a solid substance to a point (called melting point) where it turns liquid. An object, which has melted, is molten. The opposite of melting is freezing.
