Flying high

Who wouldn’t know Isabel Granada? She has been in the showbiz spotlight all her life–starting out as a precocious child actor and growing up to be a versatile actress. What most people don’t know about this Spanish-Filipina mestiza is that she’s a full-fledged pilot (yes, she does fly although not yet commercially as of press time) and a very hands-on mom to Hubert, her six-year-old with young Pampanga official and husband Jericho Aguas. We caught up with Isa in between takes of her taping for Adik Sa’Yo (GMA 7) and she regaled us with her stories and contagious energy.

Q.: How do you balance your work and raising a family?
A.: My multi-tasking in my early years has helped me a lot in my married life. I used to go to school, then tape for Happy House, then shoot movies, one after the other. But I really made sure that I wouldn’t fail my Mama and Papa. Kahit puyat ako, I’d still go to school with all my homework done. During college, I’d go to school at Patts College of Aeronautics, cross the street to fly at Masters Flying School, pass by the Philippine Air Force base to report as an air woman and do practices with the volleyball team. I became ambassadress of Nestea Beach Volleyball, did TV and movies and even toured the world for singing engagements, and met my husband in spite of my busy schedule. And now, having a family of my own, specially during the first years of Hubert na puyatan,I handled my time well. Now I make sure my son would understand my job, my profession. Jericho is an open-minded person and lets me work as an actor–he’s very understanding and very loving.

Q.: What are the fun things you love about being a mom?
A.: Fun things include play time with Hubert, we like to wrestle, play educational games, sing together. He loves taking pictures with me and his Papa. I remember nung months pa lang siya, naaaliw ako doon sa patutulugin ko siya na dapat nakatayo ako. Because when I sat down he’d wake up. Now that he’s a bit grown up, mahirap patulugin sa hapon. But we play Jack n Poy and if he wins he won’t sleep.

Q.: How did you spend Mother’s Day this year? Did your husband and son do anything special for you?
A.: We ate out. And my son knows that I love my neck pillow that I’ve had for 7 years, so he gave me another one. From blue to pink kasi girl daw ako, hehe.

Q.: What are the challenges of being a mom?
A.: Challenges? Hindi ganoon kahirap (to adjust) because even when I was single I wasn’t doing any gimmicks. I did sports and I loved my craft so I didn’t do any vices.

Q.: Would you want another child in the future?
A.: Well I need to rest another year since my last operation was in October of 2008. I pray mabigyan pa kami ng isang anak na girl Since I’m an only child, I am happy about it but I want my son to take care of a sister or brother. I want to see how that goes.

Q.: What are your plans for your family?
A.: My husband and I have businesses here in Pampanga, like Western Union, Ministop, Minitaps, Aguas Pawnshop, Golden K Dollar Exchange, and we’re soon going to open another business. As for me, as long as I see the audience still want me, I’d still go for my career in acting. I have plans to fly commercially–I have my private pilot license but I want to move up in my flying career, too. I’d like to give my son the best education there is. My focus is to teach him how to be a God-fearing person and an obedient child.
