Learning the Fundamentals

Why does Kumon offer math and reading only?
Why not science, you might ask. Or perhaps history?
Ms. Yoyie Angeles, head of the Instruction Division of Kumon Philippines, said that there are two subjects necessary to develop strong academic skills in children–and these are math and reading.
More than strengthening their skills in solving mathematical equations, through the study of the Math Program, children can develop mathematical analysis and logical thinking. These two abilities are important because children will be able to absorb information and make connections among the materials read. They are also able to formulate logical solutions or even a hypothesis.  Though not directly written on the Kumon worksheets, studying math through the Kumon Method defines and improves the children’s character as well. “Understanding the high levels in mathematics increases their persistence, diligence, sense of accomplishment, and patience. These values are important in life,” Ms. Angeles shared.
In the Reading Program, children are able to develop a high level of reading comprehension. “Reading comprehension is a must in studying any subject. Almost all the subjects are linked to reading,” Ms. Angeles stressed. “Even problem solving in math is anchored on this. Students will not be able to solve without understanding the problem. No matter how good their calculation skills are, they will experience difficulty once their comprehension skills are not in place.”
The Reading Program also nurtures children’s love for reading. As children read, they gain rich experiences, thus contributing to character development.
Kumon values holistic growth.  And through these two fundamental subjects, Kumon students may develop not just strong academic skills, but values and character as well.
