Scorching Hot Summer and the Skin

Although I was at the office all day, I wasn’t spared from tweets reminding me of how hot today was. According to ANCAlerts, the temperature went up to 36.1ºC – highest so far in 2011. The bad news, summer has just begun.

Another news overheard at the radio was an advice of how we could prevent any health risk caused by the sun, especially with our skin. Drinking plenty of water to keep our bodies hydrated was given. However, I don’t think taking a shower 3 times a day would help in the long run. Actually, the advise was to try taking a bath 3 times a day to avoid any skin disease that too much heat may inflict.

We have to make sure Metro Manila and other parts of the country have enough water for summer and even extended summer.

Here are some tips on how we can prevent any skin problems this summer:

Do not skip the Sunscreen. Sunscreen in the Philippines is more of a luxury than a necessity. So try multitasking lotions that not only moisturizes but also protects the skin from UV rays. For those who can, it is best to use oil-free sunscreen to avoid chest and back-acne.

Wear loose fitting and clean clothes. This will allow your skin to breathe and avoid contact that might further enhance heat.
Dry the skin folds well. Making sure that the skin folds are dry will prevent rashes especially for the kids.

Stay indoors or covered during the sun’s peak hours. Have you ever wondered by desert people are always covered? It’s not just about their culture, it is because they could get dehydrated when the moisture from their skin is dried up by the sun.

Exfoliate less. Filipinos love scrubbing. It is our way of knowing that we are being cleaned from all the dirt. No wonder bar soaps, even detergents, still exist here. This was from my dermatologist. When my skin is dry, she reminds me not to exfoliate because it will irritate my skin more.

No more hot baths. I enjoy hot baths than cold. Maybe because my mom always had to add hot water in my bath water when I was younger. But now, I enjoy the tank water (no Maynilad yet) because I get the right water temperature just as long as I bathe at the right time. For those who aren’t as fortunate, like me, to have a natural water heater, just skip the heater. Enjoy the cold water.

Let’s all enjoy the summer. The more the heat goes up, the water looks more and more fun and enticing. Just bear in mind that water shouldn’t be wasted so make sure every drop counts.
