The advocacy for safe pregnancy by the Philippine government is underway. The Safe Motherhood Buntis Congress was held on January 25, 2012 at the municipal covered court of Villareal in the province of Samar. According to their local municipal health officer, Dr. Rae Roche Buna, 100 pregnant women participated in the said assembly. The campaign aims to give expecting mothers the proper education on how to have a safe pregnancy (locally known “pagbubuntis”). The importance of having at least four prenatal check-ups, a birth plan and the knowledge about the danger signs for proper referral is also being stressed by health officers of the government as part of the education for these women.

The program does not only aim for the safety of these mothers but for the welfare of the whole family in promoting family planning. Dr. Buna says, “We are also encouraging couples to achieve their dreams for quality of life through proper spacing of at least three to five years.”
