Animal Names

There are different names for the males, the females and the babies of animals and it can get confusing. Many we are familiar with but others not quite as well.
For instance, a female goat is a nanny, the male goat is a Billy and the baby goat is a kid.

A female chicken is a hen, a male is a rooster and a baby is a chick. But did you know that a male crocodile is a bull and its baby is a crocklet?

These aren’t easy to remember. So here is a wonderful animal wheel for children to make so that they can play and learn their science vocabulary.

What you need:

  • Two identical pieces of paper
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Fastener

What to do:

  1. Cut both papers in the shape of a circle. One circle should be a bit smaller than the other.
  2. Mark the centre and cut out three slots between the centre and the top edge of the smaller circle.
  3. Lay the two circles together and stick the fastener through the centre and bend down the ends at the back.
  4. With the two circles together, write the animal on the top and in the slots fill in the gender and baby names.
  5. Turn the top paper until you have a clear space and write the next animal. (For a full list of animals and names try Wikipedia online; search under animal names.)
  6. Continue to rotate the paper and fill in the animal names.

Once done, you can decorate it as you wish and let kids play with it guessing while they spin the paper.
