Drawing the Line to your Preschool

Preschool is the perfect time to discipline your child and introduce good manners. This is the time when preschool children often experiment on a lot of things without really knowing the consequences of their actions.
There are different ways to discipline your preschool and you can try various approaches without being violent or too strict. One way of training your kids is to create house rules in which he can identify whether it’s time to play or time to study some lessons.
Laying out house rules all at once to your preschool is not a good idea because clearly, your preschool will not remember all of it. A little creativity on your part is needed in order to get your kid to obey by your rules.
Preschools have short attention spans so it is advisable to narrow down your house rules without sacrificing the essential part of these rules. In developing house rules, you must:
•    Limit your house rules to 3-5 items since as mentioned earlier, too many rules is just too much for kids to handle. And besides, the objective of having house rules is to communicate your expectations in a short and snappy manner that your child will remember.
•    Use positive language when creating house rules so that your preschool will not think that you’re just restricting him. For example, instead of saying, “don’t shout at someone”, you can say, “Be respectful”.
•    While you have definite house rules that you want your preschool to follow, it is also a good idea to let your preschool participate in writing house rules. This way, he will have a sense of ownership and eagerness to follow the rules.
•    Refer to your house rules frequently so that your preschool will remember them. Make this a fun exercise so that you can get him to better understand the rules.
•    Set definite time for playtime and study time. Make sure to explain to your preschool the importance of making time to do these things. Limit playtime during school nights but have weekend activities as a reward for a week’s work.

Preschool is the time when kids start to understand the concept of right and wrong. Instilling proper behavior to your preschool at such an early age will allow them to practice and make it his way of life. This way, he will grow up of having a good set of values to carry on.
