Two months is not enough to prepare you for the day that you temporarily leave your baby at home. The thought of not being able to hold your baby may scare you, but remember that it is only momentary.

Many mothers feel separation anxiety when they leave their newborn babies at home. While it may be normal for mothers to feel that way, sometimes it can be a cause of depression.

Going back to work after your maternity leave may be the farthest thing from your mind. However, your other needs dictate that you maintain your job. The experience becomes doubly hard when you need to work overseas. Coping with separation anxiety may take some time, but with enough preparation and support from your family, you are likely to deal with your unease much better.

Enlist the help of a caregiver

Knowing that your baby is in good hands will keep you from worrying. Look for someone, preferably a relative, who can look after your baby when you leave for work. It is better to have someone that you already know and trust to take care of your little one for the meantime instead of hiring a nanny whom you do not know so well.

Make your baby feel your presence even if you are not there

Babies depend on the love and care their parents give them. Your child will not feel the same anxiety as you do, but let him know that you are still there for him, although not physically. Call in to check how your baby is doing. Listening to the gurgling sounds your baby may lift any worry that has been going through your mind.

Prepare all the things your baby may need

Before leaving the house, make sure your baby has everything he needs. Doing this will calm you. Make a list of emergency numbers, and put your contact information as well so that your baby’s caregiver can easily reach for the phone when needed. If your baby needs something particular, make sure his caregiver knows what they are.

Bring something that reminds you of your baby

A picture of your baby on your desktop in the office or a piece of baby clothing can help you overcome your anxiety. It helps you to know that soon enough you will be seeing your little bundle of joy once again.

It may take some time before mothers feel comfortable leaving their babies at home. Conflicting emotions abound at first, but those can be resolved. Separation anxiety is not an easy thing to deal with, but it can become bearable once mothers get enough preparation and support to get her through.
