Positive Discipline: Disciplining your toddler need not be harsh

0
Toddler age is the time when kids have the ability to differentiate right from wrong. At this stage, your child can already understand instructions and follow directions. This is the good time to teach your toddler good moral character that he will carry on, as he gets older.
Unfortunately, some parents associate discipline with spanking or scolding. But contrary to this common practice, you can actually instill discipline in your toddler without lifting a finger or raising your voice.
Positive discipline is all about teaching your child rules and behaviors in a loving, thoughtful, and respectful manner. Practicing constant, positive discipline not only lays the foundation for a secure and confident toddler but also helps meaningfully decrease argument and anxiety within your family.
Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Walk the talk. Set a good example to your toddler by demonstrating the good behavior that you want him to adopt. Toddlers copy everything that they see adults do so it’s important for you to be conscious with your own actions.
  • Words are mightier. One very important aspect of toddler discipline is the proper use of language when you communicate with your toddler. Your choice of words can make a big impact. You’ll get your child to follow you if you refrain from using negative terms such as “Do not do that” and just tell him what to do instead.
  • Notice the good. Compliment your toddler every time he does something good in the same way that you call his attention whenever he does something wrong. This makes your toddler feel good about him and promotes positive attitude.
  • Keep your rules short and simple. It’s important to have a simple set of rules that your toddler should follow. Discuss these rules with him to ensure that he is aware of them. This makes things easier not only for your toddler but for you as well.
  • Provide choices. Giving your toddler options such as watching TV or playing with his toys, or eating ice cream or candies will make him feel more in control of things and power struggles will be lessen. Nevertheless, you must also teach your child that there are no choices when it comes to some rules especially if it involves safety.

Positive disciple promotes a healthy relationship between you and your toddler. It helps create a positive feeling that makes the atmosphere in your home light and easy. You can be strict and disciplinarian without being fearful in the eyes of your child. This will make him a happy toddler that’s not afraid to explore and at the same time commit mistakes.
