Like pregnancy, breastfeeding entails mothers to be careful on what they put in their bodies especially taking in medication that might have an effect on the breast milk produce. Many medications including birth control pills can pass through breast milk to the baby.

The two main points you need to take into consideration are the pill’s effect on your milk production and the possible effect of hormones on the baby. And while breastfeeding itself can prevent pregnancy, it is not completely reliable. If you want to prevent pregnancy while nursing, you can still take hormone pills. It is advice to wait for six weeks in nursing though before you start any type of birth control that contains hormones to ensure that your milk supply is already well established, since hormone-based methods can decrease your milk supply.

When you evaluate the effects of birth control pills, you must first identify the type of pill you want to take. There are two main types of pills that prevent pregnancy-the most commonly prescribed combination of estrogen and progesterone and progesterone-only pills.

Progesterone-only pills also known as “mini-pill”, is very effective in preventing pregnancy and is considered safe for breastfeeding moms. Some mothers even see an increase in their milk production while using this pill. Combination pill on the other hand contains estrogen, which although does not have harmful effects on the milk itself, may pose treat on your milk production. So this type of pill is not recommended for breastfeeding mothers.

Keep in mind that you need to take the same precautionary measures you take during pregnancy right after pregnancy. Breast milk is the best kind of milk you can give your baby so it is important that you stay healthy and watch what you take. Pregnancy and parenting comes with responsibility so make sure your ready to take it on.
