Learning the letters and their sounds is really a very complex thought process that is very special to our species. The ability to speak, read and write to communicate is taught and children must learn complex ideas through language as well as abstract ideas. It is vital that the mastery of the foundation is strong. Rhymes teach children the sounds in a way that encourages practice, discovery of new words and sounds. This activity is great for kindergarten and lower primary students. Parents are even known to have fun with this activity as it gets those creative juices flowing in a fun and entertaining non stressful way.

What you need:
Paper
Pens

What to do:
Write out the single consonants from b to z clearly on a sheet of paper.

b c d f g h j k l m n p q r s t v w x y z

Write out the combined consonants:
Bl   br   ch   cl   cr   dr   fl   fr   gl  gr  pl  pr  sc  scr   sh   shr   sr   st   sw   th   thr   tr   wh   wr

Now on with a fresh sheet of paper start a list with a good noun like ‘cat’.

Run through the alphabet changing the first letter so that you have words that rhyme.
Bat, fat, hat mat pat rat sat vat

Now run through the combined consonant list
Brat, chat, drat, flat scat, etc.

Now with your words make a rhyme.
1)    The big fat cat sat on the hat that was under the mat. Drat!

There are no rights and wrongs here. It is all about learning sounds and having fun. It is fun to just say the rhymes but it will be more beneficial if the children can see the words written out. Then they will see the letters that change and the letters that remain the same. Rhyme Time!
