Teaching your preschool children good manners during the holidays

Christmas is rife with social gatherings for young and old.  Your preschool children, no doubt, are at the center of the Christmas merriment! While preschool kids’ participation in yuletide activities are encouraged, letting them enjoy without so much as a reminder of how to behave around many people is hardly favorable.

Remind your preschool children basic words of courtesy

Good morning, good evening, goodbye, and thank you are basic greetings your preschool children should always remember. Whether it’s a school Christmas party with classmates and teachers, or a holiday gathering among your community’s preschool children, these words should always be practiced.

Remind preschool children not to be violent

Preschool kids are always noisy, active, and seldom in their seats to listen intently. They’d always want to be in the thick of action, but always remind them not to overdo this and shove people around, shout at other preschool kids, etc. Always remind them to fall in line properly, never to push people just so they could get in line first.

Learn to say no to preschool children’s whims

Christmas shopping is always a favorite among kids. With thoughts of toys, they’d usually get unreasonable if they don’t get exactly what they want, throwing tantrums right there on the store. Depending on your preschool child’s temperament, you’d know best how to deal with these tantrums. It is generally favorable in the interest of teaching these preschool kids some manners, however, that you do not always give in to their whims. Be it remaining silent and waiting for them to stop whining, or giving them alternative activities to do so they could forget that toy, it’s entirely up to your better parental judgment. Remember: it’s not always good to give everything they want, even if it’s Christmas.

Teach preschool children how to share

Learning from the abundance of Christmas always entails having to give something, no matter how simple. Teach your kids to share whatever they have–old toys and clothes, for instance–to fellow children of preschool age who have less. Doing good to others always feels good, and it becomes doubly meaningful if it is your preschool kids who do this.

Spend quality time with your preschool kids

The essence of Christmas is being with the people you love, spending time with them, learning from them, sharing with them. Teach preschool children the value of family–something that would undoubtedly give them more lessons to live by in the long term–by making it a point to be with them this season. With the proper guidance from their parents who care for them, preschool children would no doubt learn everything necessary.
