Tea For Two

There is something unique and whimsical about a tea party. Whether you use child-sized plastic cups or go all out and set the table with damask and roses, both the young and the old enjoy a tea party. Consider this a date with your toddler: set the table in style and have a tea party right in your own home! You can add small cupcakes, some magic wands, a few rose petals on each plate, as well as a crown for each of you to wear and voila! You have just made your very own princess fairy-tale tea party! The ideas to intrigue little minds are endless too! Just remember not to be too possessive over the teapot—give your child the chance to pour tea for herself if she wants to. Have a towel handy too in case of spills!

You can also involve your child when making special treats for certain holidays, such as hot cross buns for Easter or spiced cookies for Christmas. Talk to her about holiday traditions and let her help decorate cookies or glaze buns. Not only is she going to learn valuable motor skills along the way; she will also learn more about her cultural heritage. Make sure to include stories about holidays you had as a kid. This will make your child relate more to the experience.

You can also create special weekend rituals to give your toddlers something to look forward too at the end of every week. Make pancakes every Saturday morning or make popcorn to enjoy during a family movie on Saturday afternoons. Involve your toddlers in the preparation by allowing them to whisk batter and listen to the kernels as they pop. This way, they would associate weekends with fun family time.

You may also explore the benefits of being outside with nature with your family. Foster traditions in your family where you go someplace you can commune with the natural surroundings, preferably once a month. Encourage your tots to find leaves and rocks of different shapes and sizes during your trip. You may take a few zip lock bags for them to put in their finds along the way.

These family activities form the very fabric of family life. They provide a golden thread onto which children hold whenever they face challenges; a sense of familiarity they will associate with happiness and love.
