Early Math Skills

The following can help toddlers to form early math concepts:

  • The use of quantity words – Make sure that you use  words that signify quantity such as more, none, all gone and all done.
  • The use of objects with one to one relationships – Containers, pens and toys that have one specific lid or hole for one specific object enable toddlers to recognize patterns.
  • Objects with incremented sizes – Toys and objects such as nesting cups, stacking rings and measuring cups help toddlers have an understanding of the concept of measuring.
  • Describing the attributes of toys and objects – Using words like big, round, flat, wobbly, high as adjectives to talk about objects teach toddlers to think of objects in terms of their characteristics.
  •  Opposites – Using opposite words such as big, little, high, low, open and closed helps toddlers to think about objects in their environment in relation to each other.
  • Matching everyday objects in pairs – Matching similar objects like socks or cutlery teaches children how to identify patterns in their environment.
  • Shape sorters and form boards – Form board puzzles with knob handles and clear, vibrant shapes as well as a shape sorter with a couple of simple shapes can help a toddler to recognize patterns.
  • The use of shape words in everyday language – When you use shape words in your everyday language, you help your toddler to start to recognize the most common shapes. For example: ‘Let’s cut your sandwich in triangles. See? Now it looks like a butterfly.’
  • Climbing and crawling – When your toddler gets the chance  to climb on play equipment and crawl through tunnels and tires, it hastens his visual spatial development.
  • Forming a concept of time – A regular routine with your toddler, provides more than just emotional security; it also helps him understand the  concept of time and event sequences.

Many of the activities that occur daily in a typical household encourages early math development. Make use of these events and enrich your toddler’s experience by providing an early math vocabulary while interacting with your little one during these events.
