I’m Crushing on This Purifier — For a Few Good Reasons

PUBLISHED WITH DYSON -- While younger millennials might have their eyes set on the newest smartphone, I, as a mom, have my heart set on this purifier. Here are the reasons why 😉

Building a home is not such a simple thing — something I found out shortly after my husband and I got married and moved into our own home. For the first time in our lives, we were the only ones responsible for everything — the appliances we need, the decor, furniture, and everything else in between. And then when we moved into our second home and had a child a few years after, we had to adjust some things yet again. Babies need their own furniture and adults apparently, get a new sense of paranoia when they become parents. So whereas our considerations for our household items before we became parents mostly revolved around function and cost, health and safety were added into the equation once our daughter entered our lives.

I first read about Dyson purifiers back when they first launched their bladeless fans. I heard of its air-purifying capabilities too but while I was a bit interested because of my allergic rhinitis, I wasn’t a mom yet so I didn’t have to worry about the safety of little chubby fingers. Fast-forward to today, Dyson has invited us to try out their new Dyson Pure Cool™ and I didn’t know that it was possible to crush on a home appliance. But yes, it is possible. Younger millennials can goggle over their smartphones all they want. Us moms — and I’m sure a lot of moms will agree after reading this, have our eyes set on something better. And that’s the Dyson Pure Cool™. How much will moms love it? Let me count the ways:

The Dyson Pure Cool™ removes 99.95% of air pollutants inside our home.

We may not realize it, but the air inside our homes can also get polluted and can thereby affect our family’s health. This is called indoor air pollution. Some pollution sources that can be found inside our homes include:

  • Outdoor air pollution that can get trapped inside our homes — such as pollen from trees and flowers, city pollution such as dust and smoke, and other particulate matter.
  • Stoves — these emit particulate matter during combustion or every time we use it to cook our meals.
  • Pollen — from the indoor plants and flowers that beautify our home.
  • Pet hair and disintegrated feces — yes, our furbabies can also spread microscopic material within our home.
  • Cleaning products — we might need them to keep our home clean and sanitary, but some of these same products also contribute to indoor air pollution — releasing fumes and odors into the air.
  • Scented candles and air fresheners — some of these might contain and release formaldehyde and benzene into the air.
  • Furniture foam, carpets, rugs, and flooring — some of our home furniture can also contribute to indoor air pollution. Certain kinds of foam used in some furniture types and backing materials in rugs and flooring can emit formaldehyde.

The Dyson Pure Cool™ allows me to monitor our home’s air quality in real time.

The purifier has an LCD display that shows our home’s air quality in real time, along with temperature and humidity levels. I can now identify and minimize the harmful chemicals that might contribute to our home’s air pollution. A simple click on the purifier control shows the amount of particle molecules, pollen, VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), and even car fumes that it can detect in the air at any given time. When we first used it, the general air quality displayed 8 — I was expecting it to be lower, as honestly, our home needs a bit of dusting. It then displayed 10 and a green line after a few seconds — which I assumed meant that we’re already breathing in clean, filtered air.

I was able to try out this feature again when my husband cooked a meal for us — we live in a condo unit and our whole home typically smells of food during the entire food preparation process in spite of using a range hood. The air quality remained at 10 but the line wavered a bit from green to yellow. And the best part, our home didn’t smell of food at all compared to before we had the Dyson Pure Cool™.

The Dyson Pure Cool™ purifies the air in our home.

The purifier also captures possibly harmful particles and gases from the aforementioned identified sources of air pollution with its filter system. The purifier contains a glass HEPA filter which can absorb gases, odors, domestic fumes, and VOCs. This 9-meter condensed and borosilicate microfibre filter captures 99.95% of particle pollution as small as 0.1microns2, thereby capturing allergens, pollen, and mold. The carbon filters, on the other hand, are coated with Tris (Trishydroxymethylaminomethane) — resulting in an increased absorption efficiency in removing gases including NO2, formaldehyde, and benzene.

Admittedly, this is the feature I’m most excited about because I suffer from allergic rhinitis and morning bouts of sneezing can be a norm for me. Using the purifier a few days straight stopped my morning bouts of sneezing on its tracks. I can freely breathe through both my nostrils again whereas before I had to deal with stuffiness. Definitely a must-have for moms whose families regularly deal with allergic rhinitis.

The Dyson Pure Cool™ cools our home.

Aside from its air-purifying capabilities, the purifier also projects purified air into every corner of our home thanks to its Air Multiplier™ technology. Aside from this, the purifier also has a steady, 45º, 90º, 180º, and 350º rotation feature. This allows me to focus the purifier airflow into one area of our home — such as minimizing it at 90º when my daughter is tinkering with her toys or to a full 350º to cool the whole living area when we’re all lounging about. Aside from the forward airflow mode, which is typical for most purifiers, the Dyson Pure Cool™ also offers a diffused air mode — which works best during cooler days or on super hot days and our family has resorted to turning on the aircon unit. The diffused air mode produces a diffused yet still purified air flow — hence the purifier still cleans the air without adding into the already cool temperature.

Plus, the purifier literally looks cool in our home — with its sleek white and silver body and crisp lines.

The Dyson Pure Cool™ is made for the millennial mom.

It can be said that millennial moms are the cool mamas who are well-informed and try to make conscious decisions on everything related to their child and family. At the same time, these are the moms who are keen to use gadgets and even technology to make their home life easier. I might be considered part of the “older millennial” crowd but techie stuff still excites me and the Dyson Pure Cool™ is not an exception. It also features the Dyson Link App wherein users can download in their iOS or Android phones. Through this feature, I was able to control the purifier while I’m out and about — allowing me to monitor our home’s temperature and humidity levels, and even do something about it. I turn it on in diffused mode a few minutes before we reach home, which results in a less humid and somewhat cooler home.

At the same time, I feel that the purifier is safer to use around kids. Granted, my daughter as a baby never felt curious enough to get her fingers caught in our electric fans. But now that she’s a 4-year-old kiddo who loves prancing about our living room, her fingers had 1 or 2 accidental run-ins with our fan’s blades. With the Dyson Pure Cool™, there’s no chance of that happening due to the fact that it’s bladeless and more compact. I was also initially scared that my daughter can so easily push it over considering that it’s not that heavy. But aside from Dyson’s assurance that all their products have undergone rigid quality testing, the unit itself feels solid once installed. Plus, the Dyson Pure Cool™ is covered by a full parts and labor guarantee for 2 years. So, no worries there for moms dealing with rambunctious kids.

The Dyson Pure Cool™ offers value for money.

Of course, all these perks come at a price. The Dyson Pure Cool™ come in two models — the desk that costs PhP 34,500 and the tower purifier that costs PhP 44,500, but if you consider the health benefits — then it is worth it. For example, I spend a few hundreds of pesos on my antihistamine medicines and nose sprays, and a few more for my daughter’s nebules and syrups when she’s down with the cold. Thanks to the Dyson Pure Cool™, my allergic rhinitis, and our family’s cold bouts can be minimized. So, if you ask me, waking up without the stuffiness and no sick days for the whole family is definitely worth it.
