It’s normal for babies to get sick every now and then-this might be part of him growing up or can be a symptom of another illness. But there’s no need to panic and rush your baby to the doctor, simple remedies might just do the trick.
Some of the common illness babies experience includes flu, cold, earache, diarrhea and stomach ache. Fortunately, most of these illnesses are caused by viruses and are self-limiting, meaning they come away naturally. For the meantime, you can provide him some baby care to reduce the pain and discomfort he feels.
Diarrhea and Vomiting
More often than not, these are symptoms of digestive tract infection and focusing on preventing your baby from being dehydrated should be your number one priority. Fluids, salts, minerals, and nutrients are lost as a result, so your doctor might give your baby a rehydration formula such as Pedialyte. It is designed for fast absorption. Breastfed babies don’t need this but instead frequent nursing is recommended.
Fever
Fever is not an illness but rather a symptom of an illness. It’s common on the sixth month of your baby to have a high fever with mild illness. Bringing down his temperature will not cure the cause of fever, but it can help make him feel better. And contrary to common practices, sponge and cool baths should not be used because they can cause quivering and discomfort. Alcohol sponge bath should also not be use since it can be absorbed through the skin of your baby.
Colds
This might be one of the most difficult illnesses your baby can get. The swelling and increase mucus in your baby’s narrow nasal passages makes it difficult for him to breathe through his nose, hence sleeping pattern is disturbed. Puffy, dull or teary eyes lose of appetite and low energy and fever are some of the side effects of colds.
Giving your baby extra fluids will help him a lot. If you’re breastfeeding your baby, you can just simply nursed more often. If your baby is a little bit older already, clear fluids such as diluted apple juice may be given. Formula-fed babies on the other hand must be given additional clear fluid. Nasal Spray also helps your baby breathe properly but he might not like the feel of it.
As a parent, it is important to know quick remedies for simple illness that your baby might get from time to time. No amount of baby care can shield him from getting sick. Always have a medicine kit ready for those days and as medicine adverts say, “If symptoms persist, consult your doctor”.
