Pregnancy issues: Are x-rays good or bad when you’re expecting?

0

It’s quite safe to assume that just about everyone has heard comments stating that x-rays can possibly be harmful when conducted during the course of pregnancy. The assumption is so common that pregnancy and x-rays simply don’t belong in the same sentence that it’s almost taken as a fact. It’s not surprising, therefore, that a new mother will have more than her fair share of apprehension on having this simple test conducted during pregnancy. But the things is, not getting an x-ray done while on any stage of pregnancy – especially when you clearly need it – will more likely harm you more than your baby. It is very important to remember that in order for you to help your baby be healthy, you have to take care of yourself as well. Below are a few things an expectant mother needs to know about x-rays and pregnancy:

Is it safe to have an x-ray?

This is bound to be the first question on your mind, especially with your baby’s health being your most pressing concern. Well, in spite of controversies that revolve around the matter, x-rays during the course of pregnancy are still considered generally safe, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. While it is sensible to avoid it if at all possible, having an x-ray can also reveal important information about your health that can possibly save your life. Like a lot of things, there are advantages and consequences of x-rays. You best bet to let your doctor make the most suitable decision under your particular circumstances.

Can all x-rays be considered safe?

Of course, one x-ray is different from another, which simply means that the amount of exposure to the unborn baby on stages of pregnancy will also be different. You don’t have to worry too much, though. For instance, with dental x-rays there’s no exposure almost anywhere else but on the teeth. When you do x-rays on the legs, chest, or arms, the direct beam doesn’t target your reproductive system so your pregnancy condition should still be fairly okay. It’s a totally different matter if during pregnancy you have to have an x-ray on stomach, pelvis, kidneys or lower back, because then the chances of the developing fetus being exposed to radiation considerably increases. That is why, before doing any test, it’s highly advisable that you inform your dentist or doctor that you’re pregnant.

Pregnancy and x-rays often don’t match. But if you apply caution and consult with a trusted medical professional before undergoing any test, you’ll have much higher chances of taking care of yourself better, and  be able to give birth to a healthy baby.
