Motherhood is exhausting, and every mom deserves a break. But where can we find the time, the money, or the freedom to do it, with our full plates and full schedules?
Taking a break does not need to be extravagant or expensive to be worthwhile. It does not need to be about luxurious holidays or shopping sprees. (although those are great too!)
In fact, mothers benefit very much from simple but quick breaks, otherwise known as “micro breaks”–which boost energy and morale. A quick break can be exactly what you need to persevere and survive another day of motherhood.
Here are 5 Easy Ways for Moms to Take Quick Breaks During the Day
Give it a try!
1) Wake up before your children.
Whenever possible, try to get out of bed before your children. Many moms have discovered that waking up a few hours earlier gives them much needed me-time and even boosts their productivity throughout the day. Use the hours to do some reflection, meditation, exercise…whatever you think will give you the energy and inspiration you need to power through the day.
2) Get help from papa!
It takes two to tango, and so does managing a home! Get daddy to help with some home chores everyday. For example, get him to help with the laundry and while he is busy with the chore, take the chance to relax and spend it on doing something for yourself.
3) Do a quick breathing exercise
We often forget to breathe properly throughout our busy day, try to steal 5-10 minutes and do a quick breathing exercise. For beginners, try doing abdominal breathing technique. Here’s how:
Put one hand on the chest and another on the belly. Inhale deeply through the nose and make sure that your belly (diaphragm area) inflates gently. Exhale gently through the mouth. Aim for 6 to 10 deep and slow breaths per minute, for 10 minutes.
4) Find a quiet spot to enjoy your favorite snack.
Treat yourself! Set aside a favorite snack or beverage for you to enjoy during your “micro break” moments. When the kids are busy with toys or distractions, steal the moment and find a quiet and private spot for you to enjoy your little indulgence. It will instantly boost your mood! (The house work can always wait).
5) It is ok to be the “bad mom”
When you’ve reached the point of overwhelm, it is absolutely fine to turn to the TV or Ipad to distract the kids and help them settle down for a while. It will only be a few minutes! Tune to some educational shows or games, and use that sacred time to recharge yourself. You are never a “bad mom” when you need to recharge and regain your composure every now and then.
