Create a mini-garden in your own home and introduce your kids to the wonderful world of nature.
- Survey the nearby park or plant store for pretty rocks and stones. Your kids can help pick them out!
- It’s easy to find plants that will flourish in your mini-garden–just ask for assistance at the plant store and you will be pointed to a range of potted plants or even seedlings that will work in your area.
- Buy some shovels and trowels to help set up your planting area.
- Pick a spot that gets some sunshine. The area you place your garden in will also depend on the types of plants you want to grow–before purchasing any seeds or potted plants, ask for advice on the best environments to cultivate your crops.
- Arrange your rocks and stones in a square or circle formation to form the base of your garden. Find a sloped area so that water gets to all the roots evenly.
- Get your hands dirty by packing some soil at the center of your rocky base!
- Plant your herbs and blooms.
- Decorate with homemade popsicle stick planters that label each plant. Cut out strips of paper, write the name of the plant with colorful markers, crayons or glitter paint, and glue the label onto the popsicle stick. Firmly place the stick onto the area it labels, so you’re sure to always know what you’re growing!
- Look for fun knickknacks around the house and prettify your garden by setting them in and around the area.
- Don’t forget to water your plants regularly!
