Baby Week 14

Social Interaction And Motor Skills

Your baby is 14 weeks old today!  If you’ve gone back to work your baby is either in daycare or maybe a relative is caring for her.  She has become more familiar with the people around her, but you’ll love it that she is responding to her parents more.  She knows who you are and she is definitely showing a preference for you over anyone else.  When my son was in his third month, my mother came to visit for one whole month.  In the mornings, I was up early with him and then my mother would come out to give me a break.  My son was fed and his diaper changed so he was feeling quite good and ready to play.  He was fine with that until he had had enough of playing and let me tell you, my mother was the best and most animated playmate any baby could have.  She would lay down on the floor with him, tickle, and massage and sing the silliest songs to him.  But, when my son wanted to take his morning nap, he was irritable even though my mother tried everything to put him down for a nap!   Ultimately, it is reassuring to have your baby recognize and respond more to you.

It seems like there has been a burst of advancements in this third month regarding your baby’s motor skills.  Last week, you saw her hold a toy with one hand while bringing the other hand to the middle of her body (midline).  This week, you are beginning to see your baby bring both hands to midline and put her hands together.   This is quite a development for your baby as in later months she will learn to clap and that involves bringing her hands to midline, too.
