Baby Week 22

Social & Motor Skills Along With Weaning & Teething

Around the 22- week mark, your baby will not seem much different than she was at 20 weeks or even 18 weeks. However, try to closely watch and listen to her, and think back to a month ago. You will notice a lot of change. Babies, like the rest of us, build on their previous experiences, laying the foundations for their future. You and your family are the cornerstone of those foundations! Your child will have moved on in so many ways over the last couple of months – and here are some more possible differences you may see…

This week…

Incredibly your little one may start becoming aware of ‘stranger danger’ at this time. It is actually known as ‘stranger anxiety’ and exhibits itself in a variety of ways.  She may be hesitant if held by a stranger, may even cry out loudly in protest and will possibly – and most upsettingly for you – cry miserably when you leave the room, even if only for a few moments. This is perfectly normal and she will soon become more accustomed to others again. Always reassure her that you are there or that you will be back soon – then hurry up and go! If you need a trip to the bathroom, or spend the night with friends or partner, please don’t let the guilt you will undoubtedly feel stop you from doing what you need to do!

At this stage, there are some babies who start to sit alone for brief moments.  She still can’t do this on her own for long periods of time, so you will have to help support her or prop her up against a firm cushion. Another motor skill you may see emerge is your baby grasping her foot.  Whether she is laying on the floor or sitting on your lap, she will grab her foot and eventually bring it to her mouth!

Some mothers wean their baby off breast milk altogether around the five/six month mark. Don’t feel pressured to either continue or to give up. You must trust your instincts and if you want to continue then do so. No two children are the same – my daughter was very ready to have her bottle as soon as she was offered the choice, my son discontinued breastfeeding when he was 18 months old!

Teeth – are they there yet? This is usually an uncomfortable time for baby and family as the discomfort of teething is very real. Usually a small application of Bonjela will help – if symptoms persist and you are worried, then immediately seek medical advice.
