Baby Week 36

Gross Motor & Separation Anxiety

Your baby is 36 weeks old today!  Is she the baby you imagined her to be?  Is your child very relaxed, quiet and one who sits back to observe or are you the parent of an active baby who makes lots of noise and wants to explore every inch of your home?  You are really starting to see a personality shine through and it’s so exciting!  I had imagined my daughter would be the little girl who sat quietly and played with her tea set.  On the contrary, my daughter was very active as an infant and still is active at three and a half years old – she would rather play with the boys than sit and play teatime!

Besides developments in your baby’s personality, she continues to progress in her gross motor skills.  Last month, you saw your baby sitting alone for a few minutes and getting into the sitting position independently.  Now, you are seeing her sit independently for no specific amount of time.  Your baby will sit, play, crawl and pull herself up to a standing position all on her own.

Even with all of these great developments it doesn’t mean that your baby is okay with you leaving the room as separation anxiety is starting to set in.  You will probably notice a cry of angst when she sees you get up to walk to another room, even if it’s just for a second.  You may have to talk to her or sing to her to keep her at ease when you leave the room.  I can’t tell you how many times my neighbors have heard me singing a made up song with my son’s name in it. I’m sure they have a good laugh since I can’t carry a tune!  There are many silly things we do to keep our little ones entertained and don’t plan for that to stop anytime soon!
