Toddler Week 42

Birthday Coming Up!

Keep in mind that each child develops at her own pace, but follows a general sequence of developmental milestones during that process. Here are some developmental milestones that you can expect from your child’s second to his third birthday:

Social and Emotional Development

During this year, your child will be more comfortable being around other children. She may get excited when she sees his friends and hug them or try to interact with them. She is also gradually learning to be more independent in different situations. While parallel play (playing side by side but separate) still dominates her play patterns she might start to engage in simple cooperative play games like chasing.

Language and Communication Development

During the next year your toddler’s communication development will continue as she improves her vocabulary and learn to use progressively longer sentences. Be wary of ear infections, which can cause a delay in speech and language development.

Cognitive Development

During this year you will see your child’s imagination emerge as she begins to engage in imaginary play. She will also be able to follow two-step commands and sort simple shapes and colors. The concept of object permanence is fully established at this stage and she will be able to find things that were hidden away a while ago.

Motor Development

Your child is becoming more and more agile in her movements. During the next year she will add the next following to his motor skill repertoire: Standing on tiptoe, kicking balls, walking up and down stairs,  throwing a ball over her head and copying a circle and a line on a piece of paper.

In the coming year, celebrate as your child reaches these milestones. Remember that personality type, the environment and natural interests all influence a child’s development. If you feel concerned about any area of her development, discuss it with your health care professional.
