Last May 6, the world received a piece of exciting news – Prince Harry and Meghan welcomed a son. Ever since Meghan and Prince Harry got together, they had defied the odds – including breaking several royal traditions from their engagement to their wedding. So it is no surprise that the birth of their child – and the new royal baby – is making history as well. Here is how the son of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made and continues to make history.

The new royalty is eligible for US Citizenship

The new Sussex royalty has the privilege of availing a US Citizenship, thanks to his mother, Meghan Markle who is a married American parent, and who has resided in the United States for at least five years.

The baby is mixed-race

Meghan Markle has always been vocal in expressing her pride as a “strong, confident mixed-race woman.” The Duchess of Sussex will be sharing this characteristic with her new bundle of joy – their baby is the first mixed-race heir to the throne since the 1800s.

The birth was announced on Instagram

Although Kate and Prince William opted to announce the birth of Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis on another social media platform – Twitter – the Instagram announcement on May 6, 2019, was a first. The simple announcement from the official Instagram page of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex was the first to break the news to the world and the world rejoiced with them through 2 million likes.

He’s a little private

Unlike other royal babies in this modern age – refer to Duchess Kate’s iconic feat of standing in front of photographers with the new baby just seven hours after she gave birth – he was not introduced immediately to the world. It was not out of the ordinary, considering Meghan and Prince Harry were particularly private with matters related to the Duchess’ pregnancy. His father, Prince Harry introduced him from his arms two days after — another first as well! Considering that both Princess Diana and Kate carried their newborn babies. His name — Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was also shortly announced after.

The royal succession now has a new branch

The birth of Prince Harry and Meghan’s child now creates a new branch of succession. Right now, the newborn is seventh in line, next to his dad. Prince Andrew, Princess Eugenie, and Princess Beatrice were bumped down from the line by the birth of Prince Harry’s baby boy.
