Mother’s day 2020 is going to be a little different.

Moms, and even those who are planning to surprise their moms with family get-togethers, lunches or dinners, shopping daily offs or night outs might have to book alternative plans this time around, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic and the prevailing community quarantine.

Crisis aside, mother’s day need not be canceled. Whatever your situation, there are still plenty of opportunities to show the moms in your life that you appreciate everything they do this weekend. Here are a few ways:

Go handmade

A handmade card or artwork with a personal message is always something that all moms can appreciate. And it’s a great option considering our current limited shopping options.

No face masks, please

Please don’t gift her a cloth or reusable face mask, unless you are certain that she needs one and will use it. However, it’s also better to use this holiday as an opportunity to give her a sense of normalcy, and not something that will remind her of the situation we are currently in.

Plants, not blooms

Consider house plants instead of flowers. Flowers are beautiful, but houseplants can last longer and are beautiful on their own as well. Plus, it can be a great hobby for her especially now that we’re spending a lot of time at home.

Support her hobbies

Speaking of hobbies, support hers, or encourage her to consider new ones. Since she’ll be spending more time indoors, now is a good time to encourage her to pursue that hobby she never had the time for before. Some hobbies to consider include sewing, painting, cooking, reading, or even knitting. You can even show her YouTube tutorial videos to help her out.

Make preps early

If you intend to have food or cakes delivered, then better prepare for it and order it early if possible. Chances are, a lot of people are planning to do the same thing so you might have a hard time pulling this off if you wait for Sunday or even Saturday. Order early and book early. You can also consider sending it a few days in advance to ensure that booking a delivery service is not a problem.

Shop local

A lot of small local businesses are affected by the pandemic and the quarantine, so if you’re considering gifting the moms in your life with a special something, then consider shopping local to support them. Some options to consider include handmade jewelry, handmade stuffed toys, soaps or skincare, and even bags or clothing made from indigenous material.

Spend time together

If you’re in quarantine apart, do so virtually. Set a coffee date or lunch date (virtually or physically) and just use this opportunity to catch up and bond. You can even set up a Netflix date that includes all her favorite movies or series, or even those that you missed out on.

Write her up

If resources are slim, then you can consider writing her an actual letter. This option might be uncommon during a “regular” year, but it is something to consider now that we have the time to do it, and it is a special thing to receive during these unsettling times. If you’re clueless on what to say or include, you can start by acknowledging how different this year is and by expressing how you are still thankful for this time as you still get to spend it with your family and your mom. If you still feel awkward about it, you can also try writing down one or two memories you have together that you cherish and go off from there. Remember, you can take this opportunity to express your gratitude and appreciation for your mom. Plus, everything her child does is gold for every mom, so you got this.

Share the love this Mother’s day

No matter what you decide to do, just take this opportunity to show your mom how much you love her.

Happy Mother’s Day to all moms!
