The Big Sister Diaries: Me and my little sister’s scraped knee!

“Sugar and spice and everything nice…that’s what little girls are made of!” says the nursery rhyme. But I tell you there’s nothing nice about little girls when they’re all “malikot” and running back and forth all over the house! I should know. I am Chelsea, the big sister of a little girl named Missy.

Don’t get me wrong, I adore Missy! It’s just that she can be a handful at times, most especially when she sees that I’m the one who’s babysitting her. Maybe it’s because she sees me more as a playmate rather than an authoritative figure in her life.  For her, I’m a pushover for her favorite games such as “hide and seek”, “play tag”, and even, “fashion show-fashion show”— using, what else but my mom’s clothes!

But on the more serious side of things, I guess I’ve always known that Missy trusts me. She has a way of looking at you, with her big eyes that says “I trust you with my life!” When she looks at me that way, that’s when my big sister genes kick in! And I can’t help but be protective of her, no matter how kulit she can get. That’s why it is really a must for me to always be on my toes when I am babysitting her. It also helps that I brush up on first-aid knowledge that my mom taught me. In fact, knowing my first-aid was useful when Missy had a minor accident 3 months ago. It happened at home while our parents were away. Missy was extra active, deliberately ignoring my incessant call to stop chasing after our dog. Then, the inevitable happened! Missy tripped on her dress and fell knees first on our garage! The sight of blood gushing from her knees made me sick and I literally panicked for a moment! Until I remembered what my mom always says-“Chelsea, kapag may sugat, hugasan agad with an antiseptic para patay ang surface bacteria! Pero hindi magtatapos dyan ha? Kailangan lagyan ng Terramycin Plus (Polymyxin B Sulfate + Bacitracin Zinc + Neomycin Sulfate) Antibacterial Ointment! Para siguradong protektado from infection at patay ang mga bacteria na nasa loob ng skin!”  With that solid piece of first-aid advice, I was able to act on Missy’s wounds quickly. Good thing, we always have a tube of Terramycin in our medicine cabinet.  Anyway, I still brought Missy to the hospital that same afternoon just to be sure. The doctor who checked up on her said that it was a good thing I applied Terramycin. Apparently, the nasty wound Missy acquired was quite deep and if it not had been for my Terramycin effort, infection would have probably set in.  Whew! Terramycin saved the day!

I was rewarded, of course, with a sloppy kiss from Missy! And with her chubby cheeks cupping my face, she gently whispered—“Ate, susumbong mo ko kay mommy?” And I said, “hindi na, kasi di ba promise mo, di ka na malikot?”  She didn’t answer back. I should have known…because the next day, Missy was her usual hyperactive self!

I asked mom if she’s worried that Missy would hurt herself again. And she said she’ll never stop worrying about us. That’s what mothers do. But she also said that things will be a lot easier because she knows she can always count on me and Terramycin Plus!
