Baby Week 12

Gross Motor, Fine Motor & Communication Developments

Your baby is 12 weeks old today and she has been making great strides!  The past four weeks your baby has gained a lot of strength in her neck and now she can hold her head steady when held upright.  Another progression in gross motor skills is observed when your baby is placed on her tummy while on the floor; your baby is able to lift her head off the ground at least 45 degrees.  Although she is able to lift her head more frequently and steadier now, the surface you lay her on should still be firm without any loose cloth.  You never want to put a pillow or blanket in her cot and if you are placing her on the floor, lay a clean thin blanket or towel down and always keep an eye on her.

You have also seen developments in her fine motor skills as your baby has some playtime.  She has been holding objects/toys actively, usually rattles are the easiest to hold onto and she is now looking at the objects, too.  This development is not only a part of your baby’s fine motor skills, but a development in her cognitive skills as well.  At this age, my son loved to hear the sound of a miniature maraca when he shook it. The narrow part in the middle allowed his tiny hands to grab it.

After doing the little sounds, cooing, chuckling and laughing aloud, your baby starts to vocalize when she is alone!  It could be when she is having some time in the swing, on the floor or in her cot, but your baby is starting to entertain herself.

The days will continue to pass and each week will bring new developments so don’t miss any of it!
