Baby Week 48

Safety For Toddlers

Your baby is 48 weeks old today and before you know it, your baby will start to walk!  So yet again, you will have to, once again, baby proof your home.  Baby proofing might make it very difficult for you to access things and almost impossible for your baby, but I’d bet you’d take the difficulty any day to keep your baby safe from harm’s way.

Imagine your baby is starting to walk. She wants to go over to the cabinet, open the door, grab anything she sees, toss them out, close the door and then repeat for as long as you’ll let her.  The only problem is that her fingers will easily be clipped  in the door when she closes it. She may also grab something that is dangerous.  The cabinet and drawer locks work well and there are adhesive ones that are sufficient if you don’t want to go through the trouble of fastening with screws.

Since your baby will be able reach the door knobs soon, you want to make sure that she isn’t able to turn it and open the door because chances are, she may go in a room and accidentally lock herself in it or, even worse, open the door to get outside of your home!  Trust me, it happens more than you think.  Applying doorknob covers will  prevent your baby from gripping the doorknob and opening the door.

A few other safety measures you may want to take is securing  your area rugs and ensuring that your coffee tables, TV consoles and other low pieces of furniture have the corner/edge guards.   Your area rug/carpet can be hazardous if your baby is walking or running and slips or trips on the carpet.  Laying an anti-slip mat underneath will prevent your carpet from moving.

There are always more ways secure your home more secure. You can go online or check out your local library for more information.
